Planning a trip to Colombia? Here you'll find our day-by-day itinerary (From the coffee Andes to the Caribbean), plus the essential practical info to organise your journey.

At a glance

  • Currency — The currency is the Colombian peso (COP), with high figures (one euro is worth several thousand pesos)
  • Language — The language is Spanish, spoken in Colombia clearly and considered among the most understandable in Latin America
  • Visa — You need a passport that is valid and in GOOD condition: the Colombian authorities do not admit damaged passports (tears, stains, even minor alterations)
  • e-SIM — The main operators are Claro, Movistar, Tigo and WOM: a tourist SIM with data costs little and is bought with a passport

When to go to Colombia

Near the equator, in Colombia the climate depends on altitude more than season: tropical heat on the Caribbean coast (Cartagena, Tayrona), eternal spring in Medellin, cool in Bogota (2,600 m, bring a jacket). There are no real seasons but wetter and drier periods: the driest, ideal months are December-March and July-August. In Bogota, because of the altitude, take it easy the first day.

Practical tips

  • Safety: areas and common sense — Today's Colombia is much safer than in the past and the tourist destinations (Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, the Eje Cafetero, Tayrona) are calm
  • Scams and scopolamine — In the big tourist cities watch out for theft, bag-snatching and scams against tourists
