  • Currency — Since 2023 Croatia uses the euro: no more currency exchange for those coming from the Eurozone
  • Language — The language is Croatian, but Italian is surprisingly widespread along the coast - in Istria, the Kvarner and Dalmatia - and the main Istrian coastal towns are officially bilingual (Italian-Croatian)
  • Visa — Croatia has been in the European Union, the Schengen area and the Eurozone since 1 January 2023: EU citizens only need a valid ID card or passport, no visa, and there are no longer border checks with the other Schengen countries
  • e-SIM — Mobile coverage is good across the country, including the islands

When to go to Croatia

The coast has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers, mild winters. The interior (Zagreb, Plitvice) is continental, with sharp swings and cold winters. The best times are May-June and September, with good weather, a sea that is already (or still) pleasant, fewer crowds and lower prices than the July-August peak.

  • Driving: strict rules — An EU driving licence is enough
  • Earthquakes, fires and minefields — Croatia, like all the Balkans, is at high seismic risk
