  • Currency — Indonesian rupiah (IDR)
  • Language — Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia)
  • Visa — Visitors from most Western countries (EU, UK, US, Australia and more) need a Visa on Arrival (VOA / e-VOA tourist "B1"): around 500,000 IDR (about US$32), valid 30 days and extendable once for another 30

When to go to Indonesia

Tropical, hot and humid all year (27-32°C). Dry season roughly May to October (the best for temples, treks and beaches); rainy season November to March, with intense but short downpours. At altitude (volcanoes, Bedugul) it gets cool at night.

Practical tips

  • Active volcanoes — Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire and has many active volcanoes (Bromo, Ijen, Agung)
  • Earthquakes and tsunamis — Earthquakes are frequent and coasts are exposed to tsunamis
