Planning a trip to Slovenia? Here you'll find our day-by-day itinerary (Alpine lakes, caves and coast), plus the essential practical info to organise your journey.

At a glance

  • Currency — Slovenia uses the euro: no exchange for those arriving from the Eurozone
  • Language — The language is Slovenian
  • Visa — Slovenia is in the European Union and the Schengen area: EU citizens only need an ID card (paper or electronic) valid for travel, or a passport - a driving licence is NOT valid for entry
  • e-SIM — The main operators are A1, Telemach and Telekom Slovenije, with excellent 4G/5G coverage throughout the country (including much of the alpine valleys)

When to go to Slovenia

The climate is continental in the interior (hot summers, cold and snowy winters in the mountains) and Mediterranean on the short coast. The best time for the grand tour is May to October: the lakes and gorges are at their best in summer, while the Vrsic pass and the alpine trails are accessible from June to September (the Vrsic closes with the snow). Spring and autumn offer splendid colours and fewer crowds at Bled.

Practical tips

  • Driving and the vignette — A car is the best way to get around small, well-kept Slovenia
  • Safety — Slovenia is one of the safest countries in Europe, with very low crime
