  • Currency — The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND), which is NOT convertible outside the country: change or spend it all before leaving
  • Language — The language is Vietnamese, tonal and hard to pronounce
  • Visa — You need a passport with at least 6 months' validity, in excellent condition and with a blank page (tourists have been refused entry over a damaged booklet)

When to go to Vietnam

Vietnam is 1,800 km long and has very different climates between north, centre and south: it is hard for it to be perfect everywhere at once. In general the best period is November to March, with reduced rain and pleasant temperatures across the whole country. The monsoon and typhoon season runs roughly June to November. In the big cities air pollution can be high.

Practical tips

  • Before you go: visa and registration — Three things to sort to avoid trouble at the border: 1) a passport in excellent condition, valid for at least 6 months and with a blank page; 2) the online pre-arrival registration (mandatory from 2026, within 72 hours of arrival, at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn), which generates a QR code; 3) health insurance and a return ticket (the airline asks for it at boarding)
  • Drugs: zero tolerance — Drug penalties are among the harshest in the world: mere use is punished with 3 months to 5 years in prison, trafficking up to the death penalty
