  • Currency — The official currency is the riel (KHR), but in practice almost everything is paid in US DOLLARS, which circulate as everyday currency (notes only, no coins): change under a dollar is given in riel
  • Language — The language is Khmer, with its own alphabet
  • Visa — You need a passport valid for at least 6 months from entry
  • e-SIM — The main operators are Cellcard, Smart and Metfone: a tourist SIM with plenty of data costs very little and is easily bought at the airport or in town by showing your passport

When to go to Cambodia

Tropical monsoon climate, hot all year. The dry season (November-March) is the best time: bearable heat, clear skies, ideal for the temples of Angkor and the sea. April-May is scorching; the rainy season (May-October) brings afternoon downpours but also lush greenery, and raises Lake Tonle Sap, making the floating villages navigable.

Practical tips

  • Getting around — Between the main cities you travel by cheap, comfortable buses or private minivans; for the south an internal flight (Siem Reap-Sihanoukville) is worthwhile, avoiding long transfers
  • Safety and unexploded mines — Cambodia is now a calm country and its people are welcoming; normal precautions against pickpocketing and bag-snatching apply (mind your phone on the street in the cities)
