When to go to South Korea

Four distinct seasons. Spring (Apr-May) with cherry blossom and autumn (Oct-Nov) with foliage are the best times, mild and dry. Summer (Jun-Aug) is hot, humid and rainy with the monsoon, plus typhoons mainly in the south. Winter is cold and dry, down to -15 degrees. In Seoul, between winter and spring, fine-dust air pollution can be high.

Practical tips

  • Safety and North Korea — South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world: very low crime, a widespread police presence and CCTV everywhere - you can move around safely even at night
  • The DMZ and military areas — The Demilitarized Zone along the 38th parallel can only be visited on authorised group tours (passport and advance booking required; the JSA visit at Panmunjeom can be suspended)
